Hawaiian Rail Road

All aboard! Next stop on the Ami-loves-cool-old-abandoned-places train. Who's a dork? This girl right here. Not ashamed to admit it.

Welcome to the Hawaiian Railroad. Built in 1900, used in World War II, and abandoned about 50 years ago. Thankfully, a little society quickly dedicated themselves to saving and restoring the rail way and the many acquired train cars.

In 1970, the Hawaiian Railroad Society gained many of the trains on site today. The trains can still be operated today on the restored 6.5 mile train track. Every Sunday, a funny and polite little conductor and his staff give guests a ride on the train. You'll catch vintage diesel locomotives and several steam locomotives chugging along the tracks.

I didn't get to take a ride on the restored train but I did get a chance to take my good ole' time and wander around the so-called train station in enjoyment. One of my favorite abandoned places to date! The Railroad Society has had many of these cars donated to them... from the Navy, from whomever tour the train tracks out of their backyard before building a home, from the government. Anyways, the trains are still filled with crazy cool old artifacts! Things left over from WWII, old train signs, old building materials from when some of Oahu's biggest towns were built. Neat neat things, as you can see from the photos.

(This old car was made in Pittsburgh, PA and shipped to Hawaii in 1920. How rad?!)
